Fouad Twal

Fouad Twal is the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, a thousand-year-old jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in the Middle East. This prelate of Jordanian origin, born in 1940, was ordained a priest in 1966 near Bethlehem. He then joined the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, and defended a doctoral thesis on tribal law. He has carried out missions around the world as a diplomat of the Holy See. He was bishop of Tunis from 1992 to 2005, then was appointed coadjutor to the patriarchate of Jerusalem before taking the head of this jurisdiction in 2008. Fouad Twal has been a member of the Pontifical Interreligious Council since January 2007.
He was Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem between June 2008 and June 2016, and has since been Patriarch Emeritus of Jerusalem.
