Marc Valleur

médecin

Marc Valleur is a psychiatrist and head physician at the Marmottan Hospital in Paris, specializing in addictive behaviors. Having worked very early on on the links between addictions and risk taking, he is the first in France to have opened his consultations to gamblers of money and chance since 1998. He has written numerous articles and books on the subject, including «Le jeu pathologique» (1997), «Les pathologies de l'excÚs» (2006) and «Le désir malade» (2011). He participated as an expert in the collective book «Problem Gambling in Europe» (2009) and in the collective expertise Inserm on gambling in 2008. He is a member of the Games Advisory Committee and the Games Observatory and Publication Director of the journal Psychotropes.
In 2010, he was awarded the Legion of Honor for his pioneering work with excessive and pathological players. Having opened the consultation of Marmottan to all addictions, he was also led to be interested in the issues of «addiction to video games» or «cyberaddiction», and participated in the creation of the network of thought of clinicians on these topics («The Guild»).
Adept of a nuanced and dismissive discourse, he argues that addiction can concern almost all objects of consumption, and that the current extension of this notion must open to wide debates on issues of consumption, society, and culture, that must not remain confined to the medical field.
