Nathan Wachtel

Nathan Wachtel (born in Metz in 1935) is a historian, specialist in Latin America, professor at the Collège de France. After passing his history aggregation in 1963, Nathan Wachtel devoted his thesis to the Spanish conquest seen by the Indians of Peru. Using the oral and written sources "incas" in Spanish, this research work, unique and founding, will give rise to a book, published in 1971 under the title, The Vision of the Vanquished – The Indians of Peru before the Spanish Conquest (1530-1570). Eminent specialist in Latin America, Nathan Wachtel has drawn closer in recent years to the history of the Marran community. He has published various works on this subject, such as La Foi du souvenir (2001) or Mémoires Marranes (2011). His research is based on the archives of the Inquisição na América, mainly in trials against Judaizers. From 1992 to 2005, he held the chair of history and anthropology of Meso- and South-American societies at the Collège de France.
